Junbi Undo & Daruma Taisho - Warm-up Exercises
“Yobi Undo (Junbi Undo) – Preliminary Exercises: First, each individual part of the body is exercised systematically. Stretching exercises are performed which simultaneously strengthen the body and develop stamina. Each practice will be concluded with the same exercises, as the breathing is regulated and clam. After this the fundamental Kata – Sanchin, Tensho and Naifanchi (Shorin-ryu) are introduced. Yobi Undo has enabled the student to learn the fundamental Kata with greater ease and understanding.”

These junbi undo exercises assist the karateka follow a practical order beginning with 'range of movement' exercises for the toes and feet, the ankles, followed by the legs, torso, arms and hands and finishing with exercises for the shoulders and neck. Junbi undo exercises are designed to put all of the joints through their full range of movement, exercising all parts of the body in a balanced way with a focus to limbering up the joints, increasing circulation and warming up the body in preparation for hard training.
These exercises are essentially for the development of karate techniques and combined with a specific type of breathing so that they not only improve cardiovascular health but assist in the learning of practical martial arts techniques. They also serve an important function in mental preparation for hard training by starting slowly so that training intensity builds in step with your level of physical readiness.
In addition to warming-up the body these exercises function as conditioning exercises to improve flexibility.
